Preparing for Uganda– spiritually

We leave for our Uganda trip tomorrow!!  Some of you have been asking if you can be praying for us. Yes, absolutely!  We would love prayer for our team and our trip.
First, you’re probably interested in who is coming on the trip. We’re a great mix of 15 people. We have nurses, pharmacists, mechanics, musicians, a doctor, a pilot…I’m pretty sure we can be ready for just about anything!
Our team members are: Bridget Hurry (leader), Alex Okland (leader), Kait Alpha, Katie Arnt, David Brodsky, Chris Cox, Lynn & Neil Deardorff, DeeAndria Hampton, Meredith & Tony Hayden, Ashley & Josh Henry, Lynn Marsh, Michael Whitmore
I bet you’re also wanting to know our schedule. This is a pretty basic calendar, but honestly, I don’t know that we have too many more details figured out yet…you could say we’re already working by “Africa time” 🙂   This at least gives you an idea of where we’ll be each day:
Leave Indy
Arrive at RG!
Day at RG
Medical clinic
Medical clinic
Day at RG
Safari trip
Leave RG
Arrive home

In preparation for the trip, we put together a prayer shield. It’s a way of praying each day to cover our trip in prayer. We welcome you to pray however you feel led, but if you’d like some guidance, we’ve listed some requests with each date below.

May 19- That the Lord would continue to prepare us to work as a team.
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.”               1 Peter 4:8-11

May 20- Sunday is a day of travel with a long layover (aka excursion!) in London- Travel is rough, especially with a big group. Pray for exceeding grace among the trip participants.

May 21- Today we arrive at RG! Pray for good health so that we can be eager to see and do at RG (eagerness can seem relative when we’ve been traveling for 40 hours. Pray the Lord would give us good rest and good attitudes!)

May 22- RG Day- We will be doing many things from fixing machinery to playing soccer with the kids, and anything in between they ask of us. Pray for beautiful interactions between the team members and the Ugandan workers, children and missionaries at RG.

May 23- Clinic Day- We’re traveling to villages around RG to set up a medical clinic. Pray for practical readiness and teamwork & that the Lord would bring healing through medicine and the Spirit.

May 24- Clinic Day- As we travel out to the villages, pray that we would have compassion for those we serve, and be selfless in our service.

May 25- RG Day- Many of the team members have said they’re just excited to be at RG. We believe the Lord is at work here, and we pray that we would be a part of it during our short time at RG.

May 26- Safari day @ Murchison Falls on the Nile. Pray for a relaxing environment that allows for processing and reflection among the team.

May 27- Day of travel with layovers in Nairobi, London, & Chicago. Pray for patience, and good time for rest & reflection.

May 28- Arrive back in Indy. Pray that we would remember what we have seen.
“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” Deuteronomy 4:9

“Formission”: Overall, pray that this would not be another mission trip, but a part of our spiritual formation. When explaining our motives for coming on this trip, many of the team members described being in a place of transition. We enter this trip believing the Lord will use it as a part of formation!

  1. Tony & Meredith: You and the team are in my prayers for a great and safe trip. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide and teach you and to let you know where you might best serve this week and in future weeks. Bon Voyage!! Dad Frey
